3rd Annual Celebrate A Bandera Legend

Nestled in the Texas hill country in SE Bandera County, is a small historical community known as “Polly, Texas”. In 1858, Jose Policarpio ”Polly” Rodriguez, who was one of the first settlers of Bandera County, was the builder of this historic settlement. Polly was a famous scout and surveyor with the US Army. Later, he became a Texas Ranger, Rancher, Judge and Methodist Circuit Rider.

The village consisted mostly of Tejano ranching families along with a mix of Euro-colonist. Polly helped create “Polly’s Chapel”, “Polly’s School”, “Polly’s Fort” and “Polly’s General Store and Post Office”. Many of these historic buildings are still standing and many family descendants are still residing in this historic settlement. Over the years, Polly family, friends and community supporters have help care for the official Texas Historical Landmark known as “Polly’s Chapel”.

As a result, a non-profit Polly Texas Pioneer Association was created to preserve the legacy and heritage of “Polly, Texas”. Our primary focus is the conservation of historical landmarks created by Polly Rodriguez and others in and around the village. We are also dedicated to preserving our Tejano heritage and legacy and educating the community about the contributions of our and other ancestors.

On May 11, beginning at 11:00am, we will be conducting our third annual “Celebrate a Bandera Legend” fundraiser to continue the preservation and maintenance of Polly’s Chapel and its grounds.  Everyone is invited to a day of family fun! Come enjoy a delicious Prairie Chicken Luncheon with all the trimmings followed by a fabulous “Frontier Auction”, country music by The Gibson Sisters, longhorns, wagon rides and a tour of historic “Polly, Texas” sites. Also, the chapel is still used for services, weddings and retreats. Visit our website for more information. Currently, we are raising money to replace the eight very tall wood windows and doors on the Chapel. Everyone can use the chapel and everyone can donate. Tickets will be available at the event, admission and lunch per adult is $10, children 12 and under are $5.
